CLINTON, MS - After losses each of the last two seasons, the Millsaps College Majors reclaimed the Backyard Brawl Trophy with a convincing 42-6 victory over the 25th-ranked Mississippi College Choctaws.
The Majors piled up 293 first half yards as they took a 28-3 lead into halftime. The only points for the Choctaws came on their opening possession when
Kyle Kruse knocked through a 32-yard field goal. The Majors scored on four consecutive possessions during the half, with three scores coming on Juan Joseph touchdown tosses.
In the second half, the Majors tacked on two more touchdowns while Kruse was good on a 22-yard field goal for the Choctaws to end the game 42-6.
Choctaw quarterback
Adam Shaffer completed 26-53 passes for 208 yards and one interception. The leading receiver was
Renard Ellis with five catches for 62yards.
Brian Richardson added five catches for 59 yards.
Ryne Davison led MC with eight tackles while
Dale Meitzler picked up seven tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.
Millsaps was led by Joseph who completed 21-30 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns. Donnie Epps finished with four catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Sims led the Majors with seven stops.
Freshman punter
Chris Lovvorn had a solid debut for the Choctaws averaging 46 yards on five punts. He had a long punt of 59 yards and also had a 55 yard punt called back due to penalty.
