MONTGOMERY, AL - The Mississippi College baseball team held off a late rally by Birmingham-Southern to pick up a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Posey Field on the campus of Huntingdon College.
The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the ninth to cut the lead to 5-4 with one out and a man on second base. Junior
Brock Campbell got the final two hitters, including getting the final out of the game on a strikeout.
The Choctaws opened the scoring in the game in the bottom of the first when senior
Brannon Walls singled in junior
Andy Smith. Smith finished the game 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
MC would open up the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with RBI singles from Smith and senior
Chase Herrin. Overall, the Choctaws would add three runs in the frame to take a 4-0 lead.
The Panthers would answer in the fifth inning when JD Hulse singled in Jacob Plagens to cut the deficit to 4-1. Josh Whitaker collected a sacrifice fly that scored Brandon Ricco in the sixth inning to make the score, 4-2.
The Choctaws would add an unearned run in the seventh inning when junior
Stuart Magee singled in fellow junior
Shane Bennett to extend the lead to 5-2.
Neither team would score in the eighth inning as it set up the ninth in which the Campbell would record his second save of the season in two tries.
The Choctaws will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they face Belhaven University at 4:00 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson.
