CLINTON, Miss. --- The 2016-17 Mississippi College athletics season was full of extraordinary moments both on and off the fields of play.
In June of 2016, the NCAA informed MC that they had completed the transition process and would be full members of Division II and the Gulf South Conference, earning the right play for conference and national championships.Â
With that as the backdrop, the Office of Athletic Communications put together a committee to vote on and compose a list of the "Top 10 Choctaw Moments" on the court, field and track.
While there were many moments this past year that had the Mississippi College alumni, students and fans proud of their Choctaws and Lady Choctaws, here's the list of the absolute best.
Â
Walk-off victories are usually reserved for base hits or home runs on the baseball or softball fields or long three-point shots on the basketball courts.
On September 24
th, junior
Matt Brasher gave the MC Football team a walk-off win with a 37-yard field goal as time expired in a 27-26 victory over Cumberland (TN).
In a back-and-forth contest that saw the Phoenix grab a 26-24 lead with 1:01 remaining in the game, it was the Choctaw offense, led by quarterback
Sharone Wright, that marched down the field to set up the game-winning kick by Brasher.
After a kickoff return by sophomore
Keith Harison that opened the drive at the MC 36-yard line, Wright completed two passes for 26 yards, 13-yard completions to
Marcel Newson and
Rashad Turner, and rushed for 18 more yards to put the ball at the Cumberland (TN) 20-yard line in the final seconds.
Senior
Michael Hodges Jr. handled a low snap and Brasher did the rest by drilling the field goal right down the middle of the uprights to give MC their second victory of the season.
"I got a little nervous when I saw the ball hit the ground," Brasher said. "But I know that Mike (Hodges) has always got me, and he set it right where it needed to be."
"I'm so proud of the way these guys fought all night long," said head coach
John Bland. "The team pulled together in the final minute and got the win. What a clutch kick by Matt."
