GSC Announces 2021 Winter Academic Awards

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Gulf South Conference announced the academic awards for the 2021 winter season on Wednesday (April 7).

The winter sports honored are men's and women's basketball and men's and women's indoor track & field.

Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.

Mississippi College had nine total student-athletes named to the All-Academic Teams with five on women's indoor track & field (Tytavia Hardy, Mackenzie Hargrove, Jazmin Hernandez, Emma Langley and Marina Rizk) and four on men's indoor track & field (Gabe Poulin, Jake Russell, Rakeem Wilson and Damon Wright).

A total of 52 student-athletes were named to the Academic Honor Roll, led by women's indoor track & field with 21 and followed by men's track & field with 19. Both men's and women's basketball had six student-athletes land on the list. To qualify, the student-athlete had to have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher and have competed against outside competition this season.

A total of 396 athletes were named to GSC Winter Academic Honor Roll. There were 88 honorees in men's basketball, 111 honorees in women's basketball, 95 honorees in men's indoor track and field, and 102 honorees in women's indoor track and field. Montevallo led the conference with 69 student-athletes earning recognition.
