CLEVELAND --- The Mississippi College Department of Athletics finished the 2022-23 academic year in the top 100 of the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup for the first time since returning to Division II. Choctaw Athletics finished No. 73, as announced by the National Association of Athletic Directors.
Â
"What a great honor for our department and Mississippi College," Director of Athletics Kenny Bizot stated. "Our coaching staffs, student-athletes and support staff are dedicated to the success of our athletic department and this is a testament to their hard work this academic year. We look to continue to grow and improve this program."
It is the highest finish for the Blue and Gold in the Cup standings.
Â
MC is one of four teams in the Directors' Cup from the Gulf South Conference as it stands third behind the University of West Florida and Lee University.
Â
The Choctaw saw NCAA postseason action in five events during the 2022-23 academic year, including men's cross country, women's soccer, softball and men's track and field, who all competed at the regional level. Men's cross country and track and field advanced to the nationals with at-large berths.
Â
"This is a credit to our coaching staffs and support staff for their recruiting of quality student-athletes and preparing them for a high level of competition that exists not only in the Gulf South Conference, but throughout Division II," said Associate Athletic Director Susan Musselwhite. "It is also a great recognition of the hard work by our student-athletes. We are proud for our department and the University."
Â
Overall, 15 sports are counted in the final Division II standings, four of which must be women's volleyball, men and women's basketball and baseball. The next highest (11 max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings.
Â
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
