Strong Second Half Not Enough for Mississippi College

JACKSON, Tenn. — Mississippi College (9-9, 6-6 Gulf South) fell to Union (TN) (8-10, 4-8 Gulf South) with a final score of 74-68 on Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. The Choctaws narrowed the gap with a 49-point second half, but Union's 38 points in the paint helped secure their victory.

The game began with Mississippi College taking an early lead as DeMarcus Powe scored the first points with a jumper at 19:26. However, Union quickly responded and gained momentum, led by Casey Williams' strong performance, contributing 10 points including a dunk in the final seconds of the half. Avaughn Johnson was a key player for The Blue and Gold, scoring 10 points, but Union's defense held firm with five steals. Union capitalized on turnovers and fast breaks, outscoring MC 37-19 by the end of the first half.

Union maintained their lead in the second half, despite a strong effort by Mississippi College. Powe sparked the visitors with a jumper and a 3-pointer early in the half, narrowing the gap to 39-24. Union's Terrence Ringo Jr. responded with consecutive free throws at the 17:27 mark, keeping Union ahead. MC's Johnson contributed a crucial 3-pointer at 4:58, bringing the score to 63-54. Despite a late push, including a layup by Josh Holman with 16 seconds remaining, The Blue and Gold fell short as Union secured the win with two free throws by Mason McBride in the final seconds, ending the game 74-68.
