DECATUR, Miss. — Mississippi College (7-7-1, 2-1) fell to the University of Montevallo (12-3, 1-2) in a close contest, 4-3, as Montevallo rallied with a decisive four-run sixth inning. The Choctaws held an early lead, securing three hits in the third inning alone, but could not withstand Montevallo's late offensive surge.
The Blue and Gold took an early lead in the first inning when Shelby Samples doubled to right field and later scored on an error by the right fielder, giving MC a 1-0 advantage.
In the third inning, MC extended its lead. Morgan Lavergne singled and Sample followed with another single. Madelyn England then drove in Lavergne with a single, while Hadley Lemons added another RBI with a single to center field, bringing home Sample. The score increased to 3-0 in favor of MC.
The sixth inning saw Montevallo rally with four runs, highlighted by a home run from T. Rogers and a series of singles that brought in additional runs. This surge gave Montevallo a 4-3 lead.
Despite multiple opportunities in the later innings, including base runners left on in the seventh, the Choctaws were unable to score again, resulting in a final score of Montevallo 4, Mississippi Col. 3.
MC pitcher Camryn Bailey delivered a complete game, pitching seven innings. Bailey allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out three and walking four. She threw 102 pitches, including 62 strikes.
England posted two hits, drove in two runs and stole two bases. Samples scored twice and collected two hits, including a double, while also drawing a walk and being hit by a pitch. Lavergne recorded two hits, including a double, and scored a run.
Mississippi College moves to 7-7-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Montevallo stands at 12-3 overall and 1-2 in the GSC.
