CLINTON, Miss. — The No. 15-ranked Mississippi College women's tennis team delivered a statement victory Tuesday morning, knocking off No. 2-ranked University of West Florida, 6-1, at the MC Tennis Complex.
In the afternoon matchup, the No. 21 Mississippi College men battled the second-ranked Argonauts to the wire but came up just short in a 4-3 decision.
No. 15 Women Roll Past No. 2 West Florida
Mississippi College (5-0, 2-0 GSC) seized control early by capturing the doubles point against West Florida (3-4, 0-1 GSC).
At No. 1 doubles, Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett cruised to a 6-2 win over Carlota Verdu and Sandra Recuenco. Rocio Martinez and Anna Hudson secured the point with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, the Lady Choctaws dominated the top of the lineup. Buchanan was sharp at No. 1 singles, earning a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Verdu. Martinez followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2.
Katharina Weber rallied for a three-set victory at No. 4 singles, bouncing back after dropping the first set to claim a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win. Hudson added a straight-sets victory at No. 5, and Stockett capped the day with a thrilling three-set tiebreak win at No. 6, closing out the match with a 10-8 super tiebreak in the third.
The victory marks one of the highest-ranked wins in program history and keeps MC unbeaten in Gulf South Conference play.
No. 21 Men Fall in Heartbreaker
The Choctaw men (3-2, 1-1 GSC) pushed No. 2 West Florida (4-1, 1-0 GSC) to the brink before falling 4-3 in a tightly contested match.
After splitting at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, the doubles point came down to the No. 3 position, where West Florida edged Joshua Hinton and Sergio Ramirez Ocana in a 7-6 decision to claim the early 1-0 advantage.
Mississippi College responded in singles with three victories. Florian Walcher earned a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, while Mikayel Avanesyan secured a 7-6, 6-4 victory at No. 4. Sergio Ramirez Ocana added a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5.
The match ultimately hinged on the remaining courts, where the Argonauts captured wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles to narrowly escape Clinton with the victory.

The Lady Choctaws continue their road swing Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m. against University of Arkansas–Fort Smith in Fort Smith, Arkansas. MC will then travel to Arkadelphia on Monday, March 2 for matchups against Henderson State University at 10 a.m. and Ouachita Baptist University at 3 p.m.
The Choctaw men will also face Arkansas-Fort Smith on Sunday before traveling to Ouachita Baptist on Monday afternoon.
