CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College (21-14-1, 11-7) fell to Valdosta State (15-17, 9-9) with a final score of 3–1 on Sunday at the MC Softball Complex. The Choctaws managed nine hits, but could only convert one run, scored in the first inning.
Mississippi College and Valdosta State both scored in the first inning. Valdosta State's Saylor McNearney hit a solo home run, while Mississippi College's
Ellie Fryar doubled and later scored on
Blakely Gill's single. The score was tied at 1–1 after the first inning.
In the fifth inning, Valdosta State took the lead. Saylor McNearney and Charlotte Phillips both singled, then Chloe Eichelberger doubled to drive in McNearney. Annalise Buncy was hit by a pitch, allowing Phillips to score. Valdosta State led 3–1 after the fifth inning.
Mississippi College was unable to score in the remaining innings, keeping the final score at Valdosta State 3, The Blue and Gold 1.
Camryn Bailey pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out three batters. She threw 84 pitches, 53 of which were strikes, and recorded a WHIP of 1.95.
AK Willingham entered in relief, pitching 2 2/3 innings with one hit allowed and no runs, maintaining a WHIP of 0.45 and collecting one strikeout. Willingham's efficient performance included 26 pitches, 15 of which were strikes, and she held the opposing team scoreless during her time on the mound.
Blakely Gill finished with two hits, one RBI, and two stolen bases in the game.
Morgan Lavergne contributed two hits and added a stolen base.
Ellie Fryar recorded a double and scored one run.
MC returns to GSC action on Thursday with a single game at Christian Brothers beginning at 3 p.m., with games two and three set for Friday starting at 12 p.m. in Memphis, Tenn.
