MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Caleb Peterson struck out a career-high 11 as Mississippi College baseball held on for a 3-2 win over Christian Brothers on Thursday, April 2. MC improved to 22-14 and 15-7 in Gulf South Conference. It is the sixth GSC-series opening victory of the season for the Choctaws.
Â
Peterson (4-3) allowed just three hits and no earned runs in 8.2 innings, while walking one, facing 32 batters and throwing 71 strikes in a 101-pitch outing.
Blake Gollott (3) recorded the final out on four pitches to earn his third save of the season, which leads the team.
Â
MC managed four hits, three of them doubles, but did enough offensively in the early innings. The Choctaws took a 1-0 lead in the first when
Cade Gadman scored on a double play, then added two more in the third as
Jake LaRocca delivered a two-RBI double to plate
JT Thigpen and
Will Langston. It marked the third multiple-RBI effort of the season for the Lake Charles, La., native.
Â
Thigpen doubled, walked and scored a run. Langston reached base three times after being hit by pitches and also scored.
Â
CBU (9-25, 4-18 GSC) cut into the deficit in the seventh, capitalizing on two errors to score a pair of unearned runs and make it 3-2. But the Buccaneers were held without a hit over the final two innings as Mississippi College preserved the win.
Â
The teams continue the series on Friday, April 3 with a doubleheader. First pitch is Noon.
