CLINTON, Miss. — Karim Gegg scored twice, including the go-ahead goal, and Mississippi Christian pulled away for a 3-1 victory over Union (Tenn.) on Saturday at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
Gegg erased an early deficit with goals in the 26th and 34th minutes, giving the Choctaws a 2-1 lead before halftime. Luke Nolan added an insurance goal in the 86th minute as Mississippi Christian improved to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Union took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when George McDonnell found the net, but Mississippi Christian responded with sustained pressure.
Alvaro Pena assisted Gegg's equalizer in the 26th minute. Gegg then scored again eight minutes later off an assist from Lian Feridani to put the Choctaws in front.
Mississippi Christian continued to control the attack after halftime, outshooting Union 22-7 and putting nine shots on goal compared with two for the Bulldogs. The Choctaws recorded 12 shots in the second half.
Union created several opportunities late, including a stretch of five attacking actions between the 79th and 90th minutes. Jacob Davis also hit the right post before halftime, but Mississippi Christian goalkeeper Santiago Dominguez turned away Christopher Cerda's final attempt in the closing seconds.
Nolan's goal in the 86th minute gave the Choctaws a two-goal cushion.
Gegg finished with seven shots, including three on goal, while Pena had four shots and two on frame. Nolan recorded two shots, with one on goal.
Dominguez played all 90 minutes and made one save.
Mississippi Christian will return to action on Sept. 19, when the Choctaws travel to Trevecca Nazarene for a 3:30 p.m. match.
