Saturday Softball Set for Breast Cancer Awareness Day

CLINTON, Miss. --- Saturday's softball doubleheader between Mississippi College and Union University will be Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the MC Softball Complex.

The twin-bill is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch with both teams participating in bringing awareness to this disease that afflicts millions across the globe and many in our own community.

Both teams will be wearing pink on Saturday, and specatators are asked to wear pink in honor of those who have battled and continue to battle breast cancer. Head volleyball coach Shawna Laurendine will throw out the first pitch for the game, having completed treatments for her own battle with breast cancer just in the last few weeks.

Donations will be accepted at the ticket gates for the doubleheader on Saturday with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is the only organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy.

"Saturday will be a very special day for Mississippi College and our softball program as we support and bring awareness about breast cancer," said head coach Brooke O'Hair. "Having family and friends that have battled breast cancer and are survivors of it makes this hold a very special place in my heart.

"A big thanks to Shawna for throwing out the first pitch," O'Hair went on. "I also want to thank Mackenzie (Sher) and Union for joining in our mission to bring awareness about breast cancer."

Sher was a former assistant at Mississippi College following a standout career as a catcher at the University of Southern Mississippi.

"I'm thankful Mississippi College asked us to team up with them for Breast Cancer Awareness Day," Sher said. "It is a great opportunity to celebrate those who have won their battle with breast cancer, those that continue to fight and remember those who fought so hard. It is a personal and humbling day to play for those who are so strong."
