Record-Setting Performances Cap the Final Day of the GSC Championships

10 Choctaws Grab All-GSC Accolades

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men and women's outdoor track and field teams added to their list of accomplishments as they wrapped the final day of the Gulf South Conference Championships on Saturday, May 8.
 
Two Choctaws helped reset the GSC record book during the day headlined by two record-setting performances from Jazmin Hernandez. The Georgetown, Texas, native claimed second in the women's 800 meters as she clocked a time of 2:11.83 and was edged at the wire by two-one-hundredths of a second. Cayce Bryan from Lee University held the previous mark of 2:13.15 set in 2017. Her second record setter came in the 1,500 meters as she turned in a time of 4:35.32. The previous mark was set by Celine Ritter from Lee last season.
 
Ben Woolhouse helped reset the men's conference mark in the pole vault. The Tupelo, Miss., native posted a height of 4.91 meters to break the previous mark of 4.87 meters set in 1985 by Gary Marks of West Georgia.
 
Kelechi Christian earned the conference's Most Outstanding Freshman Performer. The Lagos, Nigeria, native found her way onto the medal stand twice during the Saturday finale as she won the women's 200 meters with a time of 23.99. She added silver to her accolades as she recorded a time of 56.34 in the 400 meters.
 
Tytavia Hardy brought home her second event crown of the weekend and her sixth All-GSC honor as she won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.937. The sixth all-conference laurel resets the program record as she surpassed former Choctaw Kiana Grant's five.
 
Kiara Vance added to the women's podium appearances as she turned in a bronze medal performance. The Clinton, Miss., product posted a throw of 38.11 meters in the discus.
 
The Choctaw men recorded nine podium appearances on the day headlined by repeat visits from Shemar Patten. The Portmore, Jamaica, product took second in the 110-meter hurdles as he clocked a time of 14.73. He added a bronze-medal finish in the 100-meters as he turned in a time of 10.73.
 
Cole Benoit finished second in the men's 1,500 meters as he clocked a time of 3:48.30. The Choctaws took two of the three podium spots in the event as Hunter Kurz finished third in the event with a time of 3:49.38.
 
It marked the second time during the day that the Navy and Gold took two spots on the podium as Fabio Palmieri and Gabe Hodson finished second and third in the 400 meters. Palmieri entered a time of 47.75 while Hodson posted a 48.15.
 
Al Ferrill recorded his second podium appearance of the event as he finished second in the discus with a throw of 46.20 meters. Wesley Gibbs finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.93.
 
The Choctaw men and women each turned in third-place finishes after the three-day event. The finish marks a program-best finish in the GSC Championships for the women as it topped its fourth-place finish from last season.
 
The 4x400 relays concluded the three-day event. The women's foursome of Christian, Hardy, Leslie Baxter and Emma Langley posted a time of 4:00.00 to grab a bronze medal.   
 
The men's quartet of Gabe Hodson, Will Grames, Wesley Gibbs and Jake Russell finished the day strong for the Choctaws as it won the event with a time of 3:14.30.
 
Student-athletes who finish first and second in their events garner First and Second Team All-GSC.
 
Lee University took the top spot on the women's side while the University of Alabama in Huntsville grabbed the men's top team honor.
 
Mississippi College now turns its attention to the Lee University Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday, May 14 in Cleveland, Tenn.
