Mississippi Christian Tennis Carries Championship Momentum Into ITA Nationals Following Strong GSC Fall Showing

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi Christian University's men's and women's tennis programs will carry a championship-filled fall season onto the national stage this week as nine student-athletes prepare to compete in the inaugural Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Singles & Doubles Championships in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The national championships begin Wednesday, Nov. 4, and continue through Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center, where five men and four women will represent Mississippi Christian against some of the nation's top NCAA Division II competitors.

The opportunity follows an impressive stretch of fall competition for the Choctaws and Lady Choctaws, highlighted by two ITA South Regional championships in October and three flight titles at the Gulf South Conference Fall Tennis Championships this past weekend.

Mississippi Christian Claims Three Titles at GSC Fall Championships

Mississippi Christian continued its fall success at the GSC Fall Tennis Championships, capturing two Flight 1 doubles championships and a singles title while recording several additional top finishes across both programs.

The men's doubles tandem of Mattia Ricci and Matias Ruiz captured the Flight 1 championship, defeating Alex Escofet Berge and Maxim Goncharov, 8-3, in the final.

On the women's side, Ann Cabot Stockett and Emily Buchanan claimed the Flight 1 doubles title with an 8-6 victory over Rima Yoshida and Marqaylar Tere.

Josh Hinton added a third championship for MC, winning the men's Flight 5 singles title, while Charles Lefort advanced to the Flight 4 singles championship match before finishing as the runner-up.

The Choctaws also received several strong performances in men's singles competition. Sergio Ramirez Ocana earned a third-place finish in Flight 2, while Julius Tan placed third in Flight 3. Ricci and Florian Walcher each advanced to the Flight 1 quarterfinals, completing the tournament with 3-1 records.

In doubles competition, Lefort and Hinton finished 3-1 in Flight 1, while Ramirez Ocana and Walcher earned runner-up honors in Flight 2.

The Lady Choctaws added several notable singles performances, led by third-place finishes from Eva Zwyrtek in Flight 3 and Lily Fule in Flight 5.

Stockett and Rune van Wyk also competed in Flight 1 singles, with both finishing 3-1 during the tournament.

The conference championships provided another strong showing for Mississippi Christian, which has consistently produced championship performances and deep tournament runs throughout the fall.

Regional Success Sets Stage for National Championships

The latest GSC results build on Mississippi Christian's success at the ITA South Regional Championships, held Oct. 16-19 in Lakeland, Florida, where the Choctaws and Lady Choctaws captured two regional titles and recorded several additional standout performances.

Emily Buchanan highlighted the women's competition by capturing the ITA South Regional singles championship without dropping a set throughout the tournament. The senior capped her championship run with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Luca Bohlen in the final.

Buchanan also teamed with Stockett to reach the women's doubles championship match, where the duo finished as regional runners-up after falling in a deciding match tiebreaker.

The Lady Choctaws added another deep doubles run as Katharina Weber and Klara Podskubkova advanced to the regional semifinals, giving Mississippi Christian two women's doubles pairings among the tournament's final four.

On the men's side, Hinton and Lefort captured the ITA South Regional doubles championship after winning five consecutive matches. The duo secured the title with a 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 10-8 victory over Matias Iturbe and Kuzma Gomziakov in the championship match.

Alejandro Vizoso Ansedes also delivered a strong regional performance, advancing to the men's singles quarterfinals after recording three consecutive victories.

The regional championships, combined with the latest GSC performances, have provided Mississippi Christian with momentum heading into this week's national competition.

Nine Choctaws Set for Inaugural ITA Division II National Championships

Mississippi Christian will be represented by nine student-athletes at the inaugural ITA Division II Singles & Doubles Championships, marking another milestone for the university's men's and women's tennis programs.

The event, scheduled for Nov. 4-8 in Tuscaloosa, will feature national championship competition in men's and women's singles and doubles, bringing together top competitors from across NCAA Division II.

The tournament features 32-player singles draws and 32-team doubles draws in both men's and women's competition, with each participant guaranteed at least three matches.

Mississippi Christian enters the event following a fall campaign that has produced five combined flight and regional championships, including two ITA South Regional titles and three GSC Fall Championships flight titles.

With championship performances from Buchanan, Hinton, Lefort, Stockett, Ricci and Ruiz, along with several additional top finishes across both programs, Mississippi Christian will look to carry its success into national championship competition.

The inaugural ITA Division II Singles & Doubles Championships begin Wednesday at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center and conclude Sunday, Nov. 8.
