Choctaws Split Saturday Twinbill

CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College baseball split its Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 11. MC (24-18, 17-10 GSC) erupted for a season-high 17 hits and used a six-run seventh inning to power past UAH 17-7 in eight innings in the opener before dropping the series finale, 7-3, to the Chargers (17-21, 12-15 GSC).

It is the first time the program has dropped a GSC home series in nearly two years. The last was to former conference member West Georgia on April 19, 2024.

In the opener, the Choctaws broke the game open in the seventh, capitalizing on defensive miscues and patient at-bats. Cade Gadman delivered a two-run single, while Jake LaRocca and Nick Slonaker each drew bases-loaded walks. An error extended the inning as MC sent runs across in a decisive outburst.

LaRocca led the way with a home run and a season-high six RBI, while Gadman added three hits and three RBI. Tyrus Williams collected four hits and scored three times, and Creek Robertson homered and drove in two runs. Ty Murphy chipped in two hits and scored a season-high four runs as the Choctaws maintained pressure throughout.

MC built momentum earlier with a two-run single from LaRocca in the fourth and a solo home run by Robertson. UAH answered with a rally in the fourth but could not keep pace.

On the mound, Dylan Cope (3-0) registered the win, tossing 1.1 innings in relief to close out the contest, holding the Chargers hitless and scoreless.

Jaxon Hay tossed a complete-game effort and UAH capitalized on a big first inning to defeat MC in the series finale. The Chargers took control early, using three walks, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly to score three runs in the first inning without recording a hit. They added to the lead in the fourth on Jayce Upton's RBI single.

The Choctaws answered in the third when Williams delivered a two-out, two-run home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 3-2. MC pulled within one again in the sixth as Gadman lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.

UAH broke the game open in the seventh. Taylor Bush drove in a run with a double before Ian Reagan followed with a two-run double to extend the lead to 7-3.

Hay (3-3) limited MC to eight hits and did not allow an earned run over seven innings, striking out three. Cooper Cooksey (2-3) took the loss for the Choctaws after allowing three earned runs in the first inning without recording an out.

Cope provided a strong relief outing for MC, allowing one earned run over a season-high 5.2 innings. Ty Murphy led the Choctaws at the plate and extended his hitting streak to three consecutive multi-hit games, while Will Langston also continued his recent surge.

The Choctaws travel to Magnolia, Ark., on Tuesday for one of two midweek, non-conference affairs on the slate. First pitch at Southern Arkansas is 3 p.m.
