Choctaws Deliver Record Performances Across Three Meets

CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College track & field competed across three meets this weekend, turning in standout performances at the Joe Walker Invitational (Ole Miss), Lee Fast Break Athletics Invitational (Lee University) and Rhodes 7-Way Meet (Rhodes College). The Choctaws combined for multiple school records, NCAA provisional marks and conference-leading performances.

Joe Walker Invitational (Ole Miss)

Mississippi College was led by a pair of elite national performances in Oxford.

In the men's 800 meters, Gabe Hodson ran a school-record 1:47.60, finishing second overall while ranking No. 3 in NCAA Division II and first in the Gulf South Conference.

In the field events, Schyler Chambers captured the triple jump title with a lifetime-best 15.49 meters (50 feet, 10 inches). The mark ranks fifth in Division II and first in the GSC.

The Choctaws also picked up an event win from Matthew Coleman in the men's javelin, throwing 62.79 meters (206 feet, 0 inches).

In the multi-events, Garrett Ross delivered a strong performance in the decathlon, recording personal bests in eight of the ten events, while also posting a 300-point personal-best improvement in his overall score to finish first and move to number 1 in the Gulf South Conference 

Mississippi College added several podium performances. Christian Balcer placed third in the 1500 meters invite with a personal-best 3:45.02, earning an NCAA provisional mark while ranking No. 1 in the GSC and second all-time at MC.

In the hurdles, Matias Vasquez finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best 52.40, an NCAA provisional mark that ranks 15th nationally and first in the conference.

On the women's side, Mallory Dial placed second in the high jump, clearing 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches). The mark ranks first in the GSC and is tied for third all-time at MC.

Additional personal-best performances included Samuel Hodson (1:50.76) and Christian Balcer (1:50.94) in the 800 meters, both moving into the program's all-time top six, while Haylei Mason posted strong marks in both hurdle events, including 1:02.49 in the 400 hurdles, ranking second all-time at MC and first in the GSC.

Lee Fast Break Athletics Invitational

The Choctaws distance squad delivered a historic showing in Cleveland, Tennessee.

Lauren Wallace broke the Mississippi College school record in the women's 5,000 meters, running a personal-best 16:38.54 to earn an NCAA provisional mark. The time ranks eighth in NCAA Division II and third in the Gulf South Conference.

Taylor Benoit followed with a personal-best 16:47.15, also an NCAA provisional mark, ranking 12th nationally, second all-time at MC, and fourth in the GSC.

In the women's 10,000 meters, Kinley Harris set a school record with a personal-best 37:01.10, ranking first in the Gulf South Conference.

Additional distance performances included Bre Bell running 16:59.81 in the 5,000 meters, while Kathryn Finch recorded 39:15.04 in the 10,000 meters, ranking 10th all-time at MC.

On the men's side, Cooper Parker posted a strong performance in the 10,000 meters, running 30:26.78, which ranks fourth all-time at MC and second in the Gulf South Conference.

Rhodes 7-Way Meet

Mississippi College added more event wins and personal-best marks in Memphis.

In the throws, Aubrey Simpson won the women's javelin with a season-best 33.02 meters (108 feet, 4 inches), while Hayden Simmons captured the men's javelin title with a personal-best 53.96 meters (177 feet, 0 inches), ranking sixth in the Gulf South Conference.

On the track, Shana Sellers earned an event victory in the women's 1500 meters with a personal-best 4:51.69.

The Choctaws also recorded podium finishes from Megan McDonough, who placed second in the women's javelin with 31.42 meters (103 feet, 1 inch), and Whitt Kilgore, who finished third in the men's 1500 meters with a personal-best 4:00.23.

Additional personal-best performances included Dorian Hurd (57.90) in the men's 400-meter hurdles, Hayden Simmons in the discus (33.19m / 108 feet, 11 inches), and Catherine Wallace in the women's 800 meters (2:17.83).

What's Next

Mississippi College will continue their outdoor season next weekend as the Choctaws head to Alabama for the UAH Rocket City Invitational.
