TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Mississippi College tennis delivered a dominant opening day at the Gulf South Conference Championship on Thursday, as the Choctaw men's team knocked off No. 4 seed Auburn Montgomery and the top-seeded women's team remained unbeaten with a sweep of Montevallo at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center.
The No. 5 seed MC men (17-6) opened the day with a strong performance, defeating AUM to move on to the semifinals.
Mississippi College secured the doubles point behind wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Sergio Ramirez Ocana and Mattia Ricci rolled to a 6-1 victory, while Matias Ruiz and Charles Lefort followed with a 6-4 win.
In singles, Simon Pfau extended the lead with a straight-sets win at No. 2 (6-4, 6-2). After AUM picked up a point at No. 1, the Choctaws responded with key victories from Ramirez Ocana at No. 6 (7-5, 6-4) and Mikayel Avanesyan, who clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback win at No. 4.
Mississippi College advances to face No. 1 seed West Florida in the semifinals on Friday at 10 a.m. CT.
Later in the day, the Mississippi College women's team continued its historic season.
The No. 1 seed Choctaws improved to a perfect 22-0 with a 4-0 sweep of No. 8 seed Montevallo in the opening round.
MC quickly grabbed the doubles point with decisive wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett, ranked No. 3 nationally, earned a 6-2 win, while Katharina Weber and Molly Bennett matched that score to secure the point.
In singles play, the Choctaws left no doubt. Ann Cabot Stockett started the run with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Rocio Martinez followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2, and nationally ranked Emily Buchanan sealed the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 1.
Matches at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 were left unfinished.
With the win, Mississippi College advances to the semifinals and will face the winner of Valdosta State and Lee on Friday at 2 p.m. CT in Tuscaloosa.
Both Choctaw squads will continue their pursuit of a GSC Championship on Friday, with the men opening semifinal play in the morning and the undefeated women following in the afternoon.
