CLINTON, Miss. — No. 10 Mississippi Christian University men's soccer erased a one-goal halftime deficit to battle Saint Leo University to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.
The Choctaws moved to 0-1-1 on the season, while Saint Leo also moved to 0-1-1.
Saint Leo struck first in the eighth minute when Viktor Danielsson found the back of the net off an assist from Luis Gaitan, giving the Lions an early 1-0 advantage.
Mississippi Christian generated opportunities to answer throughout the opening half. Karim Gegg registered multiple attempts, while Luke Nolan put an effort on frame that was turned away by Saint Leo goalkeeper Vincent Fournier. Despite the Choctaws' pressure, the Lions carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime.
The Choctaws increased the pressure in the second half. Gegg forced another save from Fournier early in the period before Gage Sorey nearly found the equalizer when his attempt struck the woodwork.
MC continued to create chances, including opportunities from the penalty spot, but Fournier kept the Choctaws off the board.
The breakthrough finally came in the 79th minute.
Brandon Reyes delivered the equalizer for Mississippi Christian, finding the back of the net off an assist from Patton Francis to pull the Choctaws even at 1-1.
Neither side was able to produce a winner over the final 11 minutes as the match ended in a draw.
Gegg led the Mississippi Christian attack with six shots, placing three on goal. Reyes finished with the Choctaws' lone goal and two points, while Francis recorded the assist.
In goal, Elliot Duffy played all 90 minutes for Mississippi Christian and recorded one save.
