CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's outdoor track and field teams gear up for the 2021 Gulf South Conference Championships, which are being held this week at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala. Action for the three-day event starts at Noon on Thursday, April 29 and runs through Saturday, May 1 with the 4x400 relay.

Daviciea McCartney and
Fabio Palmieri headline the Choctaws as they head into the championships. Both are set to compete in three individual events over the course of the three days.

McCartney holds the best distance of the season in the triple jump with a NCAA provisional mark of 14.76 meters and he ranks second in the conference in the long jump with a distance of 7.17 meters. The Garland, Texas, product is also scheduled for the 110 hurdles. Palmieri is scheduled for the 100, 200 and 400 meters. The Cape Town, South Africa ranks third in the conference in the 100 meters (10.77), 200 meters (21.60) and fifth in the 400 meters (48.27).

Former Choctaws Mike Green (1982) and Larry Myricks (1979) hold the GSC Champion records in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Green's record time of 10.23 still holds true in the 100 while Myricks' record-setting time of 20.84 sits atop the chart in the 200 meters.

Jake Russell holds the best mark this season in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.21. Raymond Johnson (1980) sits fifth on the championship list in the event with a time of 1:52.93 during his time in Clinton.

Gabe Poulin and
Rakeem Wilson close out the events on the track for the Choctaws. Poulin is set to compete in the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters. He sits second in the conference in the 5K with a time of 14:17.87 and is third on the 10K list with a 30:33.17 – both times are NCAA provisional marks.

Del Rio ranks third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a NCAA provisional time of 9:05.97 and is fifth in the conference in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:55.16. Former Choctaw Tony Ferris (1983) sits third on the list in the championships in the 1,500 with a time of 3:52.69.

A.B. Williams and
Al Ferrill each have three events in the field as the duo is set to compete in the shot put, hammer throw and discus.

Ferrill ranks third in the hammer with a throw of 48.62 meters. Williams is fourth on the list with a throw of 44.09 meters. Former Choctaw Jimmy Clarke (1979, '81, '82) holds three of the top marks in the event, including the top two (50.49 meters, '82; 50.35 meters, '81).

Williams ranks third in the discus with a toss of 46.67 meters while Ferrill is fourth with a throw of 43.45 meters. Former Choctaw Alvin Kidd, like Clarke, holds three of the top marks at the championships. Kidd set the championship record in 1982 with a distance of 52.85 meters.

Damon Wright joins Williams and Ferrill in the shot put. Williams sits second with a toss of 14.99 meters followed by Ferrill with a 14.79. Wright ranks fifth in the conference with a toss of 14.28 meters.

Mason Quimby represents the Choctaws in the high jump. Quimby holds the third-best mark this season with a leap of 1.88 meters. Tim Horn (1986) holds the second-best mark at the championships with a jump of 2.10 meters.

Ben Woolhouse ranks third on the list in the pole vault. The freshman has a distance of 4.70 meters. Former Choctaw Mike Carr is tied for second in the championships' history in the event with a distance of 2.10 meters in 1986.

Zach McManus joins McCartney in the triple jump. McManus has a leap of 14.09 meters, which is ranked fourth in the conference entering the championships.
