CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men and women's outdoor track and field teams have a combined five student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Allendale, Mich., Thursday, May 27 through Saturday, May 29.
Â
Tytavia Hardy represents the Lady Choctaws for the second straight season and the second time this athletic school year as she qualified for the women's triple jump. The Pensacola, Fla., native ranks 12th nationally in the event and is one of the top 16 performers in the event this season. Hardy finished third in the triple jump during the indoor championships earlier this year. Hardy finished 13th in the long jump and 15th in the triple jump in 2019.
Â
Daviciea McCartney qualified for two events, as he will compete in the men's 400-meter hurdles and as a member of the men's 4x400-relay team alongside
Rakeem Wilson,
Dalton Dempsey and
Fabio Palmieri. McCartney ranks 11th in the 400-hurdles while the 4x4 quartet sits eighth nationally.
Â
The Choctaws hold six individual national titles in program history – the most by any GSC member - and seek their first since 1979. Former Choctaw Larry Myricks won the men's 200-meters and the men's long jump in 1979. Myricks is a five-time national champion (200-meter dash 1978-79; long jump 1976-78-79) while Joe Boyles won the 3,000-steeplechase in 1978.
Â
Hardy will chase the first national title in program history for the Lady Choctaws. She joins former Lady Choctaws Andrea McDonald, Liz Laubenburg and Bridget Foreman as the only national qualifiers in program history.
Â
The men's 400-hurdles preliminaries are Thursday, May 27. The men's 4x400 relay prelims slated for Friday, May 28. The finals for both events are Saturday, May 29. The women's triple jump finals are Friday, May 28.
