Mulrooney Scores as Choctaws Battle Montevallo

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi Christian lost to Montevallo 3-1 on Saturday at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. The Choctaws generated 12 shots to Montevallo's five and put four on goal, but Montevallo finished with three goals on four shots on goal. MC scored once in the first half and had four corner kicks after halftime, while Montevallo added one second-half goal.

Montevallo generated early pressure with three corner kicks and a shot from Luis Billep before Billep scored at 12:41 to put the Choctaws behind 1-0. MC answered with chances from Benjamin Ellis and Hayden Mulrooney, and Mulrooney equalized at 18:45 after Andre Etcheverry had saved his earlier attempt. The Blue and Gold added late first-half shots from Karim Gegg and Ellis, but Santiago Dominguez was called on for a save on Juan Diego Alfaro Barrantes at 33:04 before Ian Palma scored at 33:11. Montevallo carried the 2-1 advantage through the end of the half.

Down 2-1 in the second half, the Choctaws generated the early pressure with shots from Luke Nolan and Mulrooney, then earned a corner kick at 60:59. The stretch tightened with fouls and yellow cards, but MC continued forward, taking three corner kicks from 65:33 to 69:36 before Mulrooney put a shot on goal that Andre Etcheverry saved at 70:23. Montevallo added to its lead at 75:55 on a goal by Viktor Willems, moving the score to 3-1. The Blue and Gold pushed late with shots from Matheus Poubel and Mulrooney, including Poubel's saved attempt at 88:40, but Montevallo held the margin through the final whistle for a 3-1 result.

Mulrooney brought MC level in the 19th minute, scoring at 18:45. Earlier, the Choctaws withstood Montevallo's early pressure, while Harry McLean recorded the home side's first shot in the ninth minute. Montevallo broke through at 12:41 on Billep's goal, but The Blue and Gold answered within the next six minutes through Mulrooney. Dominguez made a save on Juan Diego Alfaro Barrantes in the 34th minute before Ian Palma scored at 33:11, and MC went into halftime trailing 2-1.

The Choctaws spent much of the second half trying to cut into a 2-1 deficit, creating a run of pressure that included Luke Nolan's shot in the 54th minute, Hayden Mulrooney's attempt in the 57th and four corner kicks by the 70th minute. The best chance in that stretch came at 70:23, when Mulrooney put a shot on goal that Andre Etcheverry saved. Montevallo added to the margin at 75:55 on Viktor Willems' goal, making it 3-1. MC continued to push late, with Poubel taking shots in the 82nd and 89th minutes around another Mulrooney attempt, but Etcheverry saved Poubel's final effort.

Mulrooney scored the Choctaws' goal and led the team with five shots, including three on goal. Poubel added two shots and put one on frame. Dominguez started in goal and made one save over 76:16.
