TYLER, Texas — The Mississippi College women's tennis team picked up two victories, including a win over Lubbock Christian, while the Choctaw men split their matches during a strong weekend of nonconference play in Tyler, Texas.
Women Sweep Weekend
The Lady Choctaws opened the weekend with a dominant performance against UT Permian Basin, sweeping the doubles point and winning all six singles matches for a decisive team victory.
Emily Buchanan and Ann Cabot Stockett led the way with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Rune Van Wyk and Katharina Weber (6-2) and Rocio Martinez Azcarraga and Anna Hudson (6-2) completed the doubles sweep.
In singles, Mississippi College took five courts. Buchanan (No. 1), Martinez Azcarraga (No. 2), Weber (No. 4), Hudson (No. 5) and Stockett (No. 6) all earned set victories.
The Lady Choctaws followed with a 4-3 team win over Lubbock Christian.
After dropping the doubles point, Mississippi College responded by winning five of six singles courts. Buchanan earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1, while Van Wyk (No. 3) and Weber (No. 4) each recorded straight-set victories.
Stockett closed the match with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 6 to secure the team victory.
Men Split Matches
The Choctaw men opened the weekend with a strong win over UT Permian Basin.
Mississippi College took two of three doubles matches behind wins from Mattia Ricci and Matias Ruiz at No. 1 and Sergio Ramirez Ocaña and Joshua Hinton at No. 3.
In singles, the Choctaws won five courts. Ricci (No. 1), Mikayel Avanesyan (No. 3), Florian Walcher (No. 4), Ramirez Ocaña (No. 5) and Lucas Cavalcanti de Carvalho (No. 6) all posted victories.
Against Lubbock Christian, Mississippi College swept the doubles point but dropped a tightly contested match after several three-set battles. Ramirez Ocaña (No. 5) and Cavalcanti de Carvalho (No. 6) earned singles wins for the Choctaws.
Mississippi College returns to the courts next week as both teams continue their spring schedules in preparation for Gulf South Conference play.
