Choctaws Claim Weekend Wins, Down Montevallo and Sweep Tuskegee After Narrow Loss to AUM

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The No. 17 Mississippi College men's tennis team turned in a strong weekend across central Alabama, picking up a Gulf South Conference win over Montevallo Falcons on Saturday before splitting a Sunday doubleheader with AUM Warhawks and Tuskegee Golden Tigers.

The Choctaws (11-4, 3-2 GSC) opened the weekend with a dominant 6-1 victory over Montevallo on March 21, controlling the match with five singles wins after securing the doubles point.

Mississippi College claimed two of three doubles matches, highlighted by wins at No. 1 from Matias Ruiz and Mattia Ricci (6-4) and at No. 3 from Sergio Ramirez Ocana and Lucas Cavalvanti de Carvalho (7-6). In singles play, MC rolled with straight-set victories from Ricci at No. 1 and Florian Walcher at No. 4, while Ruiz, Ramirez Ocana and Cavalvanti de Carvalho each battled to three-set wins to seal the match.

On Sunday, the Choctaws opened with a narrow 4-3 setback to AUM in Montgomery. MC secured the doubles point behind a 6-3 win from Ricci and Ruiz at No. 1, but AUM answered in singles. Walcher (No. 3), Mikayel Avanesyan (No. 4) and Ramirez Ocana (No. 5) each earned victories for the Choctaws, with Avanesyan rallying in a three-set battle. The Warhawks, however, claimed wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles to edge the match.

Mississippi College bounced back later in the day with a 4-0 sweep of Tuskegee, closing the weekend on a high note in the second match of the Sunday doubleheader. The Choctaws handled business efficiently, securing the doubles point and adding three singles wins to clinch the match.

Across the weekend, MC showcased depth throughout the lineup, with multiple players contributing in both doubles and singles play. The Choctaws have now won three of their last four matches as they continue GSC play.
